One year later: Whiting Forest

Whiting Forest canopy walk opened on Oct. 7, 2018. It is the largest canopy walk in the country. In the first week of opening there were 3,000 people who took a look around. After the first year of Whiting Forest’s opening, there are some ideas on how to improve.

“The biggest thing I would say is that we’re trying to learn how to improve the public relations and to make sure that every person enjoys it,” Grounds manager for Whiting Forest, Charles Martin, said. “For me personally, it has to do with staffing. Making sure that I have enough people and that everybody safe and well taken care of.”

Charles Martin explains that the first year is all about learning. For example, in October Whiting Forest had a lot more visitors than expected.

“I would say that we’ve been pretty busy in October with visitors,” Martin said. “I never expected that we would have had to call some staff in and ask them to work some extra hours. I think that those are good problems to have.”

Throughout the year, Whiting Forest has hosted different events, from photography classes to private tours. Soon, the staff will start to get ready for the different winter events that they host.

“We are connected to Dow Gardens, so we have a few different events going on throughout the year,” Martin said.  “We have the Christmas walk coming up soon. That will be fun.”
