Last May, nearing the end of the school year, the DHS band teachers gave band students the opportunity to try playing the sousaphone. The section had gotten small. While some didn’t enjoy the new instrument, many did. 

“We have 23 tubas,” sophomore Austin Walter said. “It’s a low bass. I feel really heard.” 

Many band members felt positive over the switching that occurred.  

“It’s heavier, but it’s also really fun with all the people I’ve met and made friends with so far,” sophomore Vainavii Ayyakkannu said. 

Despite the challenges of learning a new instrument, the experience gave many students a new appreciation for the sousaphone and the people they play alongside.
