Last year the debate team had a very successful season. The whole team ended the year with the title of all around state champions and individually, the varsity, JV, and novice divisions each did quite well.
Their first tournament starts Sept. 26 in West Bloomfield and will continue through Sept. 27. This is an important tournament because it will give them a chance to see the other teams and figure out what the competition will be like as the year progresses.
“I’m anxious to see how this season is going to go,” JV debater junior Nisha Patel said. “I think we have an extremely strong team this year and we all want to do really well so I think that this year will be really interesting. I’m excited to see how we do as a team this season.”
The team has been working rapidly to prepare for the upcoming season.
“This season will be a great opportunity to continue to compete in a changing debate environment,” debate team captain, junior Sam Ungerleider said. “We are all excited for the chance to compete against several increasingly competitive schools throughout Michigan. However, it takes a lot of funding in order to maintain our travel schedule so we are currently selling smart cards, which provide discounts all around the area, in order to raise funds for the season.”
Throughout their season the debate team hopes to be as successful as they were last year, if not more. They will continue to be competitive in tournaments and as the year goes on, will make efforts to raise funds to support the team.
