Before anyone enters the story field, members create characters with race, class (career), stats, traits, and other factors that contribute to the storytelling. GURPC, a club formed three years ago, embarks on journeys every Tuesday at 3:30 pm in scenarios created by the game masters, senior Andrew Newcomb and junior Andrew Schultz. The scenarios could vary from infiltrating a castle to fighting off a plague, however, the outcome is based on the player’s decisions. Together, the members form a party and take on the challenges using the abilities they have as well as their imagination. Be it a thief who sneaks his way through his challenges or a warrior who places his trust only in his hammer, GURPC members find imagination together.

Though limitations can be placed on characters or choices based on the game design or the game masters, the decisions lie mainly in the player’s hands. Scenarios can be long lasting, and can take up to a month or two to complete, but the adventure is that of making one’s own tale.

“It’s kind of a game of improv,” sophomore Sasha Hofius said.

To those looking to join in on an experience like GURPC, the steps begin with the previously mentioned character sheet. While setting up a character may take time, members help new people ease into the session, so they can take part in the action. The game formula is not always the same, so character customization can change. From stats to abilities, new ground is there to be set foot, as well as a chance to use one’s creativity. Under the advisement of Dawn Moulthrop and DHS graduate Page Miller, GURPC is running with nine members.

“People would join for a good time, and a good story,” said Newcomb.
