Delta College incident raises concerns for dual-enrolled students

According to the Delta Collegiate, a student at Delta College was allegedly grabbed from behind getting into her vehicle and sexually assaulted on Wednesday Feb. 22 at around 6 p.m. in the J wing parking lot. A number of students at DHS are dual enrolled at Delta, which makes them susceptible to the repercussions of the incident.

Senior Caleb Broodo, who is dual enrolled at Delta, wasn’t informed about the incident. Broodo didn’t notice anything different or unusual upon attending the school after Wednesday.

“I’m actually surprised this kind of thing [would] happen,” Broodo said. “Their campus is normally pretty safe and I feel pretty safe when I go there and it looks secure. There’s plenty of police on campus and stuff so normally I’m not preoccupied about any predators on campus.”

Since Broodo only attends class in one wing at Delta, he wasn’t able to see the sticky notes a student/students had posted around Delta. The sticky notes read “I believe her.” The notes were taken down since the guidelines for posting around campus weren’t followed.

Past dual tenrolled student senior Madison Werries states that she heard little information about the incident. In order to protect students, schools should take precautions.

“I think for the most part keeping the doors locked during the day [would help protect students],” Werries said.

Broodo thinks that there are some precautions that can be taken in order to try and prevent incidents like these.

“I just don’t know how you can regulate the source,” Broodo said. “I mean [sexual assault] honestly happens in the blinds, in the dark normally, and obviously there’s precautions that they can take but I think it’s kind of hard to regulate that kind of stuff.”
