An assembly recognizing winter sports and clubs took place on Feb. 29, 2011. During sixth hour, certain students took part by representing their sport or club. The band opened the assembly with the DHS fight song while the varsity cheer and pom pon team performed by their side. First, teacher Charlie Stinson and faculty manager Beth Whelan presented the Charger Spirit award to senior Jake Riepma.

A few members from boys’ basketball, wrestling, cheer, hockey, girls’ basketball and varsity pom pon were announced to represent the winter varsity sports.

There has been much success so far this year. Wrestling was Saginaw Valley League champs and cheer beat every record this year and won first place for the first time at their districts competition. Also, the girls’ basketball team had a record of 18 and 1 before playoffs.

Not only was the assembly held to address the sports teams, but senior Jeremy Medina was chosen to talk about Kids Against Hunger. He explained the reasons for having this fundraiser at DHS and where all the money that students donate goes to.

“We raised money to support them,” Medina said. “It goes to a cause that makes a difference, not one that might make a difference.”

The school raised a total of $2,500 and was presented to Mike Mastic, coordinator for Kids Against Hunger.
In between each section of the assembly, there were performances from the varsity pom and cheer teams. Pom performed their routine which took second place at States and cheer did a hip hop routine including many stunts. The drum line also performed “Like a G6,” by Far East Movement.

The clubs were introduced beginning with DECA, who has state and national competitions coming up this spring. Followed by DECA was the photography club which is new to DHS this year. Key Club, Debate, NAHS, Update, Yearbook, BPA and robotics were also represented.

Last but not least, 2011 Renfair emcees Kelsey Baak, Hillary Hitt, Kikki Lone, JP Purtell, and Tom Skoczylas were introduced. They did a short skit, giving a preview of the talent show for the following day.

The winter assembly brought all the students together to watch some students’ talents, to congratulate them and learn more about the news taking place at DHS.
