On Feb. 28 the DHS bands all received scores of one, the highest possible, in the Band Festival. All three DHS bands – Green, Gold, and Symphonic – have been preparing for Festival since their holiday concert in December in order to obtain such high scores.

The Symphonic band played Corcoran Cadets, Aztec Dance, Mass, and Carnival from “La Fiesta Mexicana”. These movements were chosen because they are challenging pieces, and “La Fiesta Mexicana” was chosen specifically so that it may be used for an audition for a conference in Chicago which the Symphonic band hopes to attend.

As for the Gold band, they voted together as a class to play “Bravada Espirit,” “Torch of Liberty,” and “Snake Charmer,” which were chosen because, to band members, they were the most enjoyable to spend time playing and perfecting.

The Green band played “At Sight March,” “The Thunder and the Roar,” and “Dark Fortress”. “The Thunder and the Roar” was chosen to challenge the students to learn a Class B piece, which is more difficult than they would normally play.

“[Band director Steven] Derees told us that if we really loved music and enjoyed it and wanted to do well, we would,” sophomore Symphonic band member Syndey Wynne said.
