Cheerleading may come off as just glitz and glam, but the varsity cheer team does a whole lot more than that. Every Monday, cheerleaders volunteer in many different areas and every week brings on a new project. Volunteering gives the team a chance to bond over something other than the one thing that brings them together.
“We volunteer to get more involved in the community and grow more as a team,” sophomore Sophie Roeder said. “If it pays off by doing it now, it will be more worth it later on in life.”
The varsity cheer team doesn’t volunteer every week because they have to, they do it because they want to and because they are noticing the impact they’re having on the people they’re helping and it makes them feel good by giving them the confidence they need to work together as a team.
“We volunteer because we believe it is important to give back to the community,” senior Ashley Elfawal said. “It is a very fulfilling experience knowing that we are all changing other people’s lives just by the hour or so we spend volunteering each week and I think it’s helped our team look outside of ourselves and appreciate others a lot more.”
