DHS varsity and JV pompon teams competed in the Hip Hop and High Kick Championship on Nov. 4 at SVSU. The Championship showcased all kinds of Hip Hop and High Kick groups from middle school teams to the collegiate level allowing the DHS pommers to view other schools’ performances.
“I liked watching all the other teams perform and comparing their routines,” junior Alexis Steiner said.
The varsity pompon team competed in the Medium Varsity High Kick division with seven other teams and the JV team competed in Junior Varsity High Kick with four additional teams. Each team had a theme to their performance and varsity’s was Alice in Wonderland.
“We were cards and we had an Alice and a Queen,” Steiner said.
The JV team’s theme was the King of Rock and Roll.
“We wore Elvis wigs and Elvis costumes,” sophomore Jill Poliskey said. “We had guitar moves and random Elvis moves.”
Varsity placed fifth with a score of 272.5 and JV placed third with 258 points.
“I think our coaches help a lot,” Poliskey said. “They planned everything for us and made the routine and they did a really good job coaching us.”
Placing fifth was a happy surprise for the varsity team and was an exciting end to a long day.
“We’ve been doing a lot of extra practicing and a lot of conditioning and we’ve been doing tons and tons of high kicks to get ready for it [the competition],” Steiner said.
The Championship was the final competition of the fall season for the pommers. Next up will be tryouts for the winter season beginning Nov. 13.
