The DHS Hockey team defeated Gladwin in the first round of the MHSAA playoffs Monday by a score of 9-1.
Both seniors Jordan Fairbank and Jason Bonnell notched hat tricks while Fairbank also added two assists. Senior Seth Clark added two goals and two assists and junior Conrad Lather contributed four assists.
“We had some good senior leadership to get the boys pumped up, and we came out strong because of that,” senior Goaltender Nicko Allen said.
Allen had a solid game saving 13 of 14 shots against Gladwin.
The Chargers moved on to the second round to play MHS on Wednesday. Despite losing twice to the Chemics in regular season play, the Chargers came out strong, knowing they could win the game if they keep the momentum on their side.
“We have a good shot at it,” Allen said before the game. “If we play our game, and come out of the gates quick, we can take it to them.”
The game remained scoreless well into the second period as neither team showed their dominance.
The Chemics’ deep depth chart seemed to be too much for the Chargers as they finished the game winning by a score of 6-0.
Despite being shut out, the Chargers ended their season with pride, playing with heart until the final whistle blew.
The MHS Hockey team will proceed to the MHSAA Quarterfinals on March 8-9.
