Recently, DHS National Honors Society members helped to put on another successful blood drive. The NHS members collaborated with workers from the MidMichigan Blood Center along with supervision from English teacher and NHS adviser Andy Frye. The drive took place in the Green Gym throughout the school day on Feb. 27 after being rescheduled from Feb. 19 due to a cold day.

“We have four [blood drives] per year, all 56 days apart so that the people can recover,” senior Amy Sklenar said. “The next one will take place April 30.”

After being collected, the blood is distributed to miscellaneous hospitals; one out of seven patients in a hospital need the blood.

“Out of the people who actually could donate, most of them did,” Sklenar said.

Sklenar also noted that the number of people who were able to donate was lower than in previous years, leaving the total amount of donators lower. Eighty-five people signed up to donate, but only 66 of them were able to complete the task. After donating, donors received candy, cookies, and were entered in a drawing for Saginaw Spirit tickets.

“We actually only had one person pass out this time,” Sklenar said. “Usually we have four to five people.”

Although not as successful as in the past, 66 units (pints) of blood were collected from this blood drive.
