Throughout the week of Nov. 14-18, National Honors Society and Key Club joined together to put on a canned food drive at DHS. The idea for the drive was originally thought of by NHS, but soon after, they included Key Club.
“They approached us so we could get more people, and have more people involved,” senior and Key Club president Trish Abalo said.
“More hands make lighter work,” NHS advisor Mary Fredell said. “The cans were collected for the Salvation Army which will be dispersing the canned foods and household and personal items as well.”
The cans go to needy families in Midland County, who can’t afford the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. But after a week of collection, the outcome of the drive was not as successful as had hoped.
“We would have liked more participation,” Abalo said. “I think we hoped the whole school would participate. We could use more, but it has been fairly successful. Anything helps.”
After not reaching their original goal, NHS and Key Club decided to extend the food drive into the next week.
By the end of the drive, the clubs raised enough cans to fill one van load, plus a snowmobile trailer. They still have about half that amount to be taken in to the Salvation Army.
Fredell was very happy with the final success of the canned food drive, and with the involvement and enthusiasm of students and teachers.
