{"id":949,"date":"2011-03-13T08:54:13","date_gmt":"2011-03-13T13:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/update.midlandps.org\/?p=949"},"modified":"2011-12-13T07:56:52","modified_gmt":"2011-12-13T12:56:52","slug":"jazz-bands-hold-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.midlandps.org\/index.php\/2011\/03\/jazz-bands-hold-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"Jazz bands hold concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>By Kikki Lone<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>staff writer<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both jazz bands, under the direction of Steve DeRees, performed at the Central Middle School auditorium on Mar. 3 beginning at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The first ensemble to perform was Jazz Band 2, who opened with an upbeat and lively \u201cJailhouse Rock.\u201d The song featured a tenor saxophone duet by Curtis Novak and Christine Mialki and a guitar solo by Kevin Eckstein.<\/p>\n<p>Their second song slowed things down with a number titled \u201cBlues Machine.\u201d Other songs included \u201cBlue and Moody,\u201d \u201cM\u00e1s Que Nada,\u201d \u201cLouie Louie\u201d and \u201cFinal Drive\u201d with solo acts from Nathan Schell on trumpet, Jonathan Mitchell on trombone, Kimball Ostergaard on Barry saxophone, Keenan Hammer, Paige Miller and Courtney Lambesis on alto saxophone, Ben Monticello and Daniel Engwis on the drum kit and Ryan Gallant on bassoon.<\/p>\n<p>Jazz Band 1 began their set with a quick tune called \u201cLester Leaps In.\u201d They continued their showcase with songs including \u201cFirestar,\u201d \u201cMoon Dance,\u201d \u201cThe Stripper\u201d and \u201cTiger of San Pedro.\u201d Featured on piano and vocals for \u201cDon\u2019t Know Why\u201d was Morgan Wynne.
