To move on pass the first round, students needed to score at least 17 out of 40 on the multiple choice test. The math department is hoping all students who qualified will continue onto Part II which is all short answer. Of the 1170 students across Michigan who qualified for Part II, only the top 100 test takers in the state will be honored at an awards banquet on March 21, 2015 at Eastern Michigan University. The top 50 will receive scholarships ranging from $250 to $2500.<\/p>\n<p>Math teacher Garrett Turner enjoys being active with the whole math community and is excited to move forward for the competition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The thinking and problem solving part of it [is my favorite part],&#8221; Turner said. &#8220;I enjoy trying to solve problems that I don\u2019t know the answers to. It is fun for me to be challenged on questions that I don\u2019t have a set strategy on how to solve it. Both of the above competitions are great because you don\u2019t know what questions will be asked so they really challenge your problem solving abilities. There was one question that I spent nearly an hour on trying to get to the right answer. That seems like death to some, but I really enjoy those challenges.
