Over the past couple of weeks,\u00a0citizens of\u00a0Hong Kong\u00a0have swarmed to the streets to protest a recent decision by China’s Chief Executive C. Y. Leung. Earlier this year,\u00a0Leung and his\u00a0Communist Party decided to appoint a small group of party supporters to select\u00a0candidates for Hong Kong’s highest office. This small committee consists mainly of\u00a0Bejing\u00a0supporters who\u00a0are viewed with hostility because of their allegiance.<\/p>\n
By restricting the candidates\u00a0the citizens can vote for, people in Hong Kong feel China has overstepped\u00a0its authority in the “one country, two systems” doctrine which has allotted Hong Kong desirable sovereignty in recent years.<\/p>\n
Though no one has been\u00a0killed\u00a0in the protests, the Hong Kong government reports that 165 people have been\u00a0injured.\u00a0China has\u00a0also\u00a0resorted to censorship in\u00a0an\u00a0effort to contain and stop the protests.<\/p>\n
According to CNN, this attempt has not helped, as students moved the protest into a new week by keeping their strategically obtrusive protest locations occupied this Monday. These protests show a growing resentment of the Chinese government and are part of a global trend in which strong central authority is increasingly being questioned and protested, a trend that seems primed to continue.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, news from the Middle East has drowned this story out of the mainstream news. Senior Jeremy Moore, who\u00a0stays informed\u00a0on current events, had not heard of what was going on in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
“All of the news recently has been covering ISIS\u00a0[and not focusing on any other topics],”\u00a0Moore said.<\/p>\n
