DHS Drama Club is putting on a production of the musical, “Fame”, May 9-11. Auditions begin the week of Feb. 25. A\u00a0prerequisite for eligibility to audition is the ability to perform during Ren Fair on Feb. 23 at Midland Center for the Arts.<\/p>\n
Senior Molly Rossman has been performing in DHS drama productions since her sophomore year, when she was in “Blood Brothers”.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love the people and the feeling you get when you’re performing,\u201d Rossman said. \u201cIt’s exhilarating.\u201d<\/p>\n
The musical, based off of the 1980s film, tells the story of Carmen, a confident dancer with an ego, Serena, a shy but enthusiastic actress, Joe, a comical acting student, Schlomo, a classical violinist who starts a rock band and Tyrone, a talented but dyslexic hip-hop dancer. They are all talented high school students attending the High School of Performing Arts. The show explores issues of prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s a very diverse show with an upbeat feel and a rock band for an orchestra,\u201d Rossman said.<\/p>\n
Rossman hopes to be cast as Carmen or Serena.<\/p>\n
Director Amy Bushey encourages anyone with interest to audition, even if they have no experience with drama productions.<\/p>\n
DHS alumnus Jeanine Wolf spoke at the initial meeting for the musical, also encouraging students to audition. Wolf had also never taken part in a drama production, but auditioned on a whim and ended up getting a lead part in last year’s production of “Hairspray”. Wolf received a standing ovation after her performance, and said she was able to take with her many new friends and memories.<\/p>\n
The only audition requirements are the Ren Fair performance, paired with four characteristics: attendance, ability, work ethic and attitude.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
