The National Honors Society (NHS) at DHS is always aiming to help people all over the community through volunteering and fundraisers. Whenever the holiday season comes around, NHS finds a way to raise money in a way that not only benefits their chosen organization, but also the students here at DHS.<\/p>\n
From Dec. 3 to Dec. 13,\u00a0during both lunches, members of NHS\u00a0are selling\u00a0candy grams. A candy gram consists of both a candy cane dressed up as a reindeer and a note to the student who will receive it. At lunch, one student will purchase one or more candy grams, at\u00a0$1 each, for their friend to receive during their third hour on Friday, Dec. 14. Most students like to keep their purchase a secret from their friend until it is delivered to them. Others like to stay completely anonymous and keep the sender of the candy gram a mystery.<\/p>\n
NHS Vice President, senior Clare Hyde, sees the benefits of the candy gram fundraiser to the students at DHS.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a great way to raise money because it\u2019s spreading joy throughout the Christmas season,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cThat\u2019s what the Christmas season is supposed to be about: telling people and making sure that they know that you care about them and that they\u2019re important to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The same idea that is achieved through the candy gram fundraiser is also the philosophy of NHS to the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cNHS is about spreading our wealth, I guess you could say,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cWhether it\u2019s through knowledge or through emotions or feelings or whatnot through the community and through our school.\u201d<\/p>\n
The original sale of candy grams was going to end on Dec. 7 but was extended for an entire week because of the success of prior sales.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was extended in order to raise more money for the Adopt-a-Family,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cWe knew we could get more [money]. The sales did very, very well last week. And yes, they\u2019re continuing. They are picking up speed tremendously.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
