Throughout the week of Nov. 14-18, National Honors Society and Key Club joined together to put on a canned food drive at DHS. The idea for the drive was originally thought of by NHS, but soon after, they included Key Club.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey approached us so we could get more people, and have more people involved,\u201d senior and Key Club president Trish Abalo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore hands make lighter work,\u201d NHS advisor Mary Fredell said. \u201cThe cans were collected for the Salvation Army which will be dispersing the canned foods and household and personal items as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cans go to needy families in Midland County, who can\u2019t afford the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. But after a week of collection, the outcome of the drive was not as successful as had hoped. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe would have liked more participation,\u201d Abalo said. \u201cI think we hoped the whole school would participate. We could use more, but it has been fairly successful. Anything helps.\u201d<\/p>\n

After not reaching their original goal, NHS and Key Club decided to extend the food drive into the next week.
\nBy the end of the drive, the clubs raised enough cans to fill one van load, plus a snowmobile trailer. They still have about half that amount to be taken in to the Salvation Army. <\/p>\n

Fredell was very happy with the final success of the canned food drive, and with the involvement and enthusiasm of students and teachers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
