\n<\/strong>now at dow & out of bounds<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Lactate set, module and VO2 max. Although these words may be foreign to most students at DHS, for the girls of the swim team this is just another day in the pool. Girls swimming has been a varsity sport at DHS for a long time and has always been a strong force.The girls of the 2011 team are proud of this accomplishment and are working hard to keep their record up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t lost this year,\u201d freshman Lauren Hall said.<\/p>\n

The team practices up to six hours a day, six days a week between morning and afternoon practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hardest part about swimming is all the time you have to put in, it\u2019s a lot of work, and practices are really hard,\u201d freshman Jasmine Purtell said.<\/p>\n

A typical practice can consist of time spent in the pool, and doing dry land workouts such as bleachers and cycling. Hard work seems to be the key to success for the girls.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always tough but, you have to train really hard to get better,\u201d sophomore Kara Dean said.<\/p>\n

The practice pays off when the girls go to meets. Each swimmer is allowed to swim in up to four races, two individual and two relays. The strokes include freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best part of the meets is getting to race people, I like the competition,\u201d junior Emily Maraskine said. \u201cMy least favorite part is that you have to swim a bunch of races really close together, you don\u2019t get a lot of time to rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swimming is not the only part of the meets, diving is also an event. There are four types of dives; forward, backward, inward, reverse and twist. These dives vary in the level of difficulty. They vary from basic dives to additional combinations. The DHS team currently has two divers.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year there were no divers, so this year everyone is excited about having us,\u201d sophomore Kathleen Bailey said.<\/p>\n

Divers practice less often than swimmers, but this doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s any easier.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started diving because I tried swimming and it was too hard, and I thought diving would be easier,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t, but I stuck with it anyway. It\u2019s actually really hard and exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n

A lot of the strength of the team comes from the strong chemistry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really together this year,\u201d Maraskine said. \u201cNot that we weren\u2019t before but it\u2019s more noticeable this year, no one\u2019s left out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maraskine also noted the differences between club swimming and DHS swimming.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you swim for club it\u2019s for yourself, but on this team, it\u2019s all about the team,\u201d Maraskine said. \u201cYou\u2019re focused on scoring points for the team, and it\u2019s a lot less about yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean agreed with Maraskine on team chemistry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really close, it\u2019s like a second family, and we are with each other for like five to six hours a day,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n

The team aspect of swimming seems to be most important during meets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always a teammate behind the Dow lanes to cheer you on,\u201d Hall said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean knows the importance of team support at the meets.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really need your teammates to get you through those hard sets and events,\u201d Hall said.<\/p>\n

Although the swim team has been a strong program at DHS for a number of years, the swimmers agree that it doesn\u2019t seem to get the attention that other sports such as football receive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a football fan too, but we\u2019ve been undefeated for many years,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n

Purtell agreed with the lack of a fan base for their team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think our sport is definitely under appreciated,\u201d Dean said. \u201cPeople don\u2019t think swimming is hard, they think anyone can do it, we win every single one of our meets. People just don\u2019t seem to care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean thinks that the pattern of swimming being ignored is not just at DHS.<\/p>\n

\u201cSwimming is overlooked as a sport in general; Americans don\u2019t really pay attention until Michael Phelps is winning the Olympics,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n

As the season comes to a close, and the girls look towards States and finishing the season, there are many mixed feelings about closure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m kind of glad, just because we\u2019ve been working so hard, and we\u2019re all so tired, but I\u2019m also sad to see it go because it\u2019s been a great season,\u201d Maraskine said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
