As the Drama Club finds itself deep into the rehearsal process of this years fall play “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare, two members of the cast with different theater background reflect on rehearsals so far. <\/p>\n

With two weeks of rehearsal for the Drama Club\u2019s production of William Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cThe Tempest\u201d under his belt, freshman Alex Lauderbach reflects on his experiences thus far. Though this is Lauderbach\u2019s first play, he thinks he\u2019s grasping the concept of acting pretty well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Because this is Lauderbach\u2019s first show, the act of memorizing lines could be a challenging feat- let alone the fact that the entire script is in the original Shakespearean English. Not only does Lauderbach have to memorize the lines, but he also has to be able to deliver them in an engaging way for the audience. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI always try to think \u2018What is my character thinking?\u2019\u201d Lauderbach said. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to get to the state of mind that my character is in.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span>With only a few more weeks of rehearsal until the show, Lauderbach hopes to get to know his castmates better and memorize his lines until the show opens on Nov. 21. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really excited to get on stage and see what people have done with the scenery,\u201d Lauderbach said. \u201cI\u2019m also really looking forward to having the lines memorized so I can be in the best state of mind for the play.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stolz jumped around the room while reciting her lines. \u201cI play a character named Ariel, and he\u2019s not human, he\u2019s technically a wind spirit,\u201d Stolz said. \u201cIt involves a lot of cartwheeling on stage and running around and acting almost animalistic, so that\u2019s been difficult but fun.\u201d <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Having been in a multitude of shows, ranging from \u201cThe Music Man\u201d to \u201cThe 12 Dancing Princesses\u201d, junior Anna Stolz knows the drill. When she was cast as Ariel in the Drama Club\u2019s Production of William Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cThe Tempest\u201d, she got to work, immediately studying her lines.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith Shakespeare, there\u2019s another added level, so I have been going through my script every day, thinking about it when I\u2019m bored in math class,\u201d Stolz said. \u201cIt\u2019s a constant thing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Even though Stolz has been through the process multiple times, nerves always seem to follow her to every show she\u2019s in. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI try to think of a reason why my character would be nervous because a lot of times it\u2019s hard to just put the nerves away,\u201d Stolz said. \u201cI think of motivation for how my character would react and evidence for that. It also just helps get me into character, honestly.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Stolz was drawn to theater for one specific reason: simply to be someone else. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI get to become someone else entirely, even if it\u2019s just for an hour a day,\u201d Stolz said. \u201cI get to forget my problems and become a different creature, in this case. [Ariel\u2019s] problems become my problems and everything in my life becomes so much less significant.\u201d  <\/span><\/p>\n

Though both actors have different levels of experience, their methods of preparation are similar. <\/span><\/p>\n
