Everyone\u00a0has\u00a0their own\u00a0“thing.”\u00a0From\u00a0football to\u00a0competition math, students\u00a0at DHS occupy themselves with a variety of hobbies and passions. This winter,\u00a0senior Andrew\u00a0Pumford\u00a0will be honing his skills in a sport where he can flex his creativity and free spirit: skiing.<\/p>\n

Skiing\u00a0has always been\u00a0something\u00a0Pumford\u00a0loved to do, but at age 14,\u00a0freeskiing\u00a0became his obsession.<\/p>\n

“I remember when I learned my first three-sixty, and I remember the dude that taught me,”\u00a0Pumford\u00a0said. “And\u00a0from that point on I was into it.”<\/p>\n

The art of\u00a0freeskiing, otherwise known as\u00a0freestyle skiing or\u00a0park skiing,\u00a0involves absolute control of\u00a0one’s\u00a0body in order to perform tricks off\u00a0jumps,\u00a0on rails,\u00a0and other\u00a0terrain park features. But for\u00a0Pumford,\u00a0freeskiing\u00a0is more than doing the coolest trick, or the most technical maneuver.\u00a0Freeskiing\u00a0is about the freedom to do whatever the skier feels, escaping from the rules and rigidity of organized sports.<\/p>\n

“I prefer un-organized sports compared to organized sports,”\u00a0Pumford\u00a0said.\u00a0“Mostly because I don’t like coaches, and\u00a0I’ve never had a coach that I liked.”<\/p>\n

Despite\u00a0his passion for disconformity, and perhaps fueling his love for the freedom of his sport,\u00a0Pumford\u00a0has competed in\u00a0some\u00a0freeskiing\u00a0events.<\/p>\n

“I’ve tried a few freestyle skiing competitions, USASA competitions,”\u00a0Pumford\u00a0said. “I just\u00a0don’t like them.\u00a0It’s\u00a0so organized, you have to wait like two hours to take a run, and then you have people judging you, and it\u2019s their opinion. So I just like doing it for my own fun.”<\/p>\n

Pumford\u00a0enjoys skiing whenever he can, and having a cottage at Boyne\u00a0Mountain gives him ample opportunity to do so. However, his most memorable\u00a0experience on the skis did not come on his home turf.<\/p>\n

“My favorite place to ski is Mt. Hood in Oregon,”\u00a0Pumford\u00a0said. “I went there for a week when I was 16 and that was just a blast.\u00a0You’re on a\u00a0snowfield and it\u2019s the middle of summer, and your skiing and its 60 degrees out and sunny. That was the best, for sure [my] best experience.”<\/p>\n

For others interested in\u00a0freeskiing\u00a0or getting into skiing at all,\u00a0Pumford\u00a0recommends just going to the closest and cheapest place. Skiing can be an expensive hobby,\u00a0so\u00a0getting a feel for the sport before fully committing is recommended.<\/p>\n
