On Sept. 5 the varsity football team traveled to Saginaw to play against the Heritage Hawks. The final score ended up being 49-34 with the Chargers taking home the victory.
“We haven’t beat Heritage in five years,” junior Wynn Diegel said. “It was a lot on Coach Peterson and the team because he used to coach there, so we had to get the win for him, and we went in there and did.”
Varsity football coach Matthew Peterson coached at Heritage High School from 2018 to 2019 while he continued to teach at DHS.
“I think the kids’ ability to step up in situations that arise [helped],” Peterson said. “We had some guys get banged up last week, and we had some guys that didn’t have a whole lot of playing time the first week, and they stepped up, and they did a really good job.”
The team’s next game is on Sept. 26 at home against Traverse City Central.
